A.C. Petersen Farms Grant: Liquid Nitrogen Day

  • School Year: 2024-2025
  • Applicants: Johanna Foley, Lead Applicant & Tamashi Hettiarachchi
  • School: Hall High School
  • Subjects: STEAM

A racquet ball that normally bounces becomes rigid and shatters after sitting in liquid nitrogen. A banana hardens into a tool strong enough to hammer a nail, and inflated balloons shrivel as if emptied only to reinflate quickly as they warm up to room temperature. Each 11th grade student at Hall High School will experience Liquid Nitrogen Day. During their chemistry class, they will experience first-hand the amazing effects of -196 degrees celsius on matter! Students will be amazed and intrigued as they experiment with the concepts of heat transfer and properties of matter that they have studied throughout the year.
