This grant will provide a music therapy program to provide opportunities for Norfeldt students to increase attention, give an outlet to express/increase verbal and non-verbal communication and enhance cognitive function. Many of our students have significant communication delays and may find it more difficult to learn from traditional lessons and benefit from alternative means of instruction. Using music in these lessons will engage the students and give them opportunities to improve their verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Music offers a safe and structured space for both verbal and non-verbal communication, helps with memory, and can be adjusted to fit each students' abilities. By adding music therapy, students gain an engaging way to communicate and grow, which will have a direct measurable effect on their education and progress.
