The Flamenco: Art and Passion Grant will allow students at both Hall and Conard High Schools to get to know and work with flamenco dancer and choreographer Sonia Olla and flamenco singer Ismael Frenandez when they serve as artists in residence for a day. Students of two different departments in two different schools will learn about the collaborative and expressive art form of flamenco, where every performer must listen and respond to one another, creating an intense, immersive and communicative experience. This workshop will complement the curriculum by exposing students to the history and evolution of an art form rooted in the traditions of the Romani people, that serves as both a historical record and a living force to preserve cultural identity.
