Julia Fox Memorial Grant: Raku Firing with Vicente Garcia

  • School Year: 2024-2025
  • Applicants: Jessica Fallis, Lead Applicant & Kristina Tsantiris (Hall High)
  • School: Conard High School
  • Subjects: Visual Arts

This project will provide Conard and Hall High students with a hands-on field experience opportunity to engage in a college-level workshop taught by local artist and head of the CCSU art department, Vicente Garcia. Vicente works with alternative ceramics firing processes such as raku, smoke, and saggar fire. This grant will provide the funds for students to attend the workshop, including the workshop fee, bus fee, and the funds for clay to create the pieces for this workshop. Students will create their pieces in the classroom, and then travel to Vicente’s studio, where they will engage in the hands-on workshop with a master ceramic artist. Vicente will demonstrate three alternative firing techniques for the clay pieces, and students will engage in the 5 hour workshop, completing the firings from start to finish and taking home 3-5 unique pieces from their experience.
