This grant will fund the purchase of guided reading books for Duffy Elementary School for Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms. These new texts will feature diverse stories and characters that represent gender diversity, people of color, and people with disabilities, ethnic, cultural and religious minorities. Using these text in the classroom will help support cultural competence, beginning reading skills and strategies and student engagement. Students need diverse books where they can see their own identities and experiences, so they may develop empathy for others and build awareness of feelings and emotions of other people. Student engagement is critical to reading success. Diverse books will increase the probability that students will find and choose books that are reflections of themselves and their families.
