  • Applicants: Matthew Dicks, Lead Teacher
  • School: Wolcott
  • Subjects: Other ~ College and career readiness

Fifth-grade students at Wolcott Elementary school will be able to experience college and be given the opportunity to see what secondary education looks like by touring Manchester Community College and Trinity College. College is not always financially viable for every student, however, this grant provides an opportunity for students to see that going to college is truly available to everyone and can be achieved, no matter the level of family income. The Common Core curriculum emphasizes a focus on college and career readiness and students will be given an opportunity to witness what college is really like with this grant. The experience of touring two different colleges at such a young age will help them as they progress through the college readiness part of the curriculum. With this opportunity, students will be able to define the skills required to succeed in college and be able to identify which goals need to be achieved in order to make college possible. The college visits will increase student enthusiasm towards college and open up the possibilities for their future.
