Books in Many Languages

This grant will provide funding for a bilingual section in the Whiting Lane Elementary School library (pre-K – grade 5). This section will feature bilingual books (English and another language side-by-side), paired with multilingual books (several copies of the same book each in a different language) and leveled books in languages other than English. This section of the library will serve many functions from improving student learning to engaging parents who speak other languages to promoting greater cultural awareness at the school. Books that specifically address the content of the WHPS curriculum can also be purchased. Teachers (media specialist and ELL teacher) will collaborate to order the books and create a section in the library. This program will foster growth in reading fluency and comprehension, vocabulary growth and development, and parental involvementand and cultural competence.
