Bucket Drumming in the vocal music classroom! Bucket drumming, or street drumming, is a style of music that originated on the streets of New York City in the 1990’s. Students will use this style of performance to practice rhythms from the vocal music curriculum. Due to the current COVID-related-restrictions, elementary students are unfortunately not able to sing during this crucial time in their lives for musical development. Although performing as a percussion ensemble will not directly address this gap in instruction, it will flood their learning with other imperative musical skills. It is especially challenging to provide students with instruction rich in ensemble skills, complex rhythm, collaborative musicianship, expressive music creation, music literacy and joy during these times. A "bucket band" will fit within the safety parameters while providing an experiential and authentic medium in which to learn these valuable musical skills.
