Crate & Barrel Grant: Learning Through Listening

  • School Year: 2015-2016
  • Applicants: Deb Kantrowitz, Lead Teacher
  • School: Whiting Lane
  • Subjects: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Technology

Comprehension and fluency are essential for students to become good readers. Research has shown that students need to partake in repeated readings as well as listen while reading in order to improve reading rate, accuracy and comprehension. Teachers at Whiting Lane Elementary School will preload appropriate leveled reading material on the iPod Nanos designated for the students’ reading levels. In addition to listening to repeated readings, the iPod Nano will allow learners to listen to a fluent version of the text they are reading in written form. It is important to hear good examples of fluent reading in order to expand vocabulary and build stamina. Students, especially struggling readers, will focus on pacing, inflection and expression of the oral presentation. These are important skills all students need to become better readers.
