Dr. Karen List Grant: Up, Up and Away!
- School Year: 2014-2015
- Applicants: Kathy Hardesty, Lead Teacher Courtney Jacklin, Melissa Behrens, Brenda Smith
- School: Smith
- Subjects: Science
All students at Smith Elementary School will participate in this exciting event. A meteorological balloon will be filled with helium and launched with a payload that is comprised of photo and video cameras suspended to the balloon. The cameras will be programmed to take pictures every 7 seconds during a 2.5 hour trip. The balloon will go approximately up to 20 miles high, deep into the stratosphere where it will explode after 1.5 hours. A parachute will slow the capsule down back to earth during a 1 hour fall. The photographs will form a panoramic view of the Earth's horizon as a curved surface. Many areas of the curriculum will be integrated during the process of researching weather patterns, building and testing the capsule, making predictions, collecting data measurements, and Skyping with the balloon trackers . Students will exhibit the final photographic and video imagery at a whole school assembly in November.
