Dr. Tracey Wilson Memorial Grant: Social Memory and the Wadsworth

  • School Year: 2025-2026
  • Applicants: Emily Genser, Kristen Rubin
  • School: Conard High School
  • Subjects: Language Arts, Visual Arts

We are excited to bring 12th grade Conard students to visit the Peter Waite exhibit at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Students will first read John Berger's Ways of Seeing to gain an understanding of the importance of art and to analyze their own unique ways of seeing the world. Students will apply their learning from Ways of Seeing as they take notes and actively view Peter Waite's artwork. Upon their return to school, students will compose a reflection on the artwork they viewed, applying the ideas of John Berger's text. They will then create their own image in the style of Peter Waite with a written or audio analysis of how their individual piece exposes something about "the progression of time, shifting social priorities, exploration of communal environments, [or] personal memory" in their own lives. The experience will culminate with a curated gallery of the students' work.
