Frank Webb's Bath & Lighting Center Grant: A Day with Author/Illustrator Grace Lin
- School Year: 2017-2018
- Applicants: Liz Nascimento, Lead Teacher
- School: Bugbee
- Subjects: Visual Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies
This grant will bring Grace Lin, award-winning author and illustrator, to Bugbee Elementary School to work with students for a day. Ms. Lin will spend time with every grade level and discuss the writing process from idea to book. Ms. Lin writes about the Asian-American experience, and she touches the hearts of her readers by detailing what it is like to grow up in a multicultural family. “Books erase bias, they make the uncommon everyday, and the mundane exotic. A book makes all cultures universal,” she says. Asian-American experiences are often under-represented in children’s books and Ms. Lin aims to provide a window into the Asian-American experience for those of different backgrounds, and a mirror for Asian-American students. The students will be introduced to Ms. Lin’s work prior to her arrival through a variety of experiences and lessons presented by classroom teachers and the librarian. Students will have the opportunity to interact with her during the presentations and question/answer period and to create a piece of visual art as well.
