Charter Oak Elementary School 4th grade students will work with the West Hartford based Sonia Plumb Dance Company in daily workshops during a weeklong residency. The 4th grade topics of study include: ecosystems, the water cycle, human rights around the world, sound and light as artistic expression, conflict and resolution and how an individual can initiate change. The dance company’s program, “Water Wars”, integrates concepts from these units and helps students learn about water as it relates to the world around us and our spiritual and physical relation to it. Through discussions and creative movement sessions, the students will develop an expressive movement piece focused on water which will be performed for peers and parents along with selections from the performance piece ”Water Wars” by Plumb’s company. The integration of the arts and academic units presents a meaningful, memorable and powerful learning experience for these students.
