The experience of moving to a new country not only requires learning a new language, but also adapting to an entirely new community. This grant at Smith STEM Elementary School will provide newcomer English Language Learners the opportunity to participate in a hands-on exploration of West Hartford as they acculturate into American society, develop English vocabulary, and gain background knowledge. Students will travel to three high-interest community gems and participate in programs aligned to ESOL and mainstream curriculum. Through this program, students will have access to places in their community that they may not have had access to otherwise due to limited family resources.
