Hawkins Family Grant: Books in Many Languages
- School Year: 2018-2019
- Applicants: Katherine Prigodich, Lead Teacher
- School: Duffy
- Subjects: Language Arts, World Language, Other ~ ESOL
This grant will fund the expansion of a section for the Duffy School library with books in languages other than English, including but not limited to Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Japanese, German and Burmese. The grant will fund the purchase of books for all ages, thereby benefiting over four hundred students of all elementary ages. This section will feature bilingual books (books that have English and another language side-by-side), paired multilingual books (where the same book title is available in English and in other languages) and leveled books in languages other than English. This section of the library will serve many functions such as cultural competence, supporting literacy in native languages, building vocabulary, increased reading comprehension and fluency, UDL, Universal Design for Learning and student and parent engagement. Many of the school’s students come from diverse backgrounds with parents who may not read English well. These students will feel more welcomed at our school by having text and stories they can relate to, and these students will have the experience of their parent being a leader at the school.
