- School Year: 2015-2016
- Applicants: Sarah Lynch, Lead Teacher Christine Mori
- School: Wolcott
- Subjects: Visual Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies
This grant will bring Grace Lin, award winning author and illustrator, to Wolcott Elementary School to work with students for a day. It will also purchase 30 copies of her books/audio books to be available in the library. Ms. Lin’s books are about the Asian-American experience, and she touches the hearts of her readers by detailing what it is like to grow up in a multicultural family. She believes that “books erase bias, they make the uncommon every day, and the mundane exotic. A book makes all cultures universal”. The students will be introduced to Ms. Lin’s work prior to her arrival through a variety of experiences and lessons presented by classroom teachers and the librarian. On the day of her visit she will make 4 different grade level appropriate presentations focusing on aspects of her written and artistic work. Topics will include: the book making process, cultures and traditions, how fact and fiction blend in her books or how experience and myth inspire her work. Students will have the opportunity to interact with her during the presentations and question/answer period and to create a piece of visual are as well.
