This grant will allow 1st grade students at Smith Elementary School to grow and care for a variety of individual plants in a soilless, water based medium, and to clearly observe the complete life cycle of that plant and gain an understanding of its structural parts. By growing and observing the stages of a plant’s life cycle from seed to flower and fruit and then to seed production, students will come to realize that plant life is more than what they see at the produce section of their grocery store or a beautifully arranged flower box. They will investigate the important role plants play in our world as food, natural resource and habitat, and with luck and green thumbs they will harvest crops and package seeds for future gardens.
