JP Carroll Construction Grant: Kindergartners Code

  • School Year: 2020-2021
  • Applicants: Sharon Zajack, Lead Teacher & Alison Foley, Michelle Deegan, Kelly Frenette, Sara Novak
  • School: Smith
  • Subjects: Math, Technology

This grant will allow all Smith STEM Elementary School Kindergartners to begin their journey into computer science. With no distracting screens or overwhelming keyboards, students learn and play with computer science by programming Cubetto, a wooden block robot, and creating stories on adventure mats. Through the early childhood lens of play, students will work collaboratively to learn about such coding language and concepts as algorithms, looping, functions, and debugging. As students persevere, they develop and employ critical thinking and problem solving skills, giving them greater confidence in their abilities to tackle new, and more difficult challenges.
