James M. Ellis Memorial Grant: Bomba in the 6th Grade General Music Classroom

  • School Year: 2024-2025
  • Applicants: Myles Ross (King Philip) Lead Applicant & Katie Frewen (Bristow)
  • School: King Philip Middle School
  • Subjects: Diversity/Equity, Music, Physical Education & Health Education/Wellness, World Language

This project will expand the 6th grade general music curriculum at Bristow and King Philip by incorporating bomba, a type of traditional music from Puerto Rico. Learning bomba in the middle school general music classroom will enrich the students' musical experience and provide them with an opportunity to explore another culture in depth. Puerto Rican drums (percussion) offer a "hands-on" and engaging way for students to learn about rhythm, teamwork, and cultural diversity through music. The instruments purchased with these grant funds are built to last for many years, so this grant will have a lasting effect on the general music experience. Students will learn how to dance fundamental bomba movements, sing several traditional songs, and play common bomba rhythms on drums. Culminating their learning, the students will be able to perform bomba music together as a community using these three learned skills.
