This grant makes it possible for Smith STEM Elementary School 3rd graders to have two unique maritime adventures, one local, and one far away. Imagine an unmanned 5 foot mini-sailboat carrying information and artifacts written and selected by the students sailing beyond the Continental Shelf of the Atlantic Ocean. Like a message in a bottle, whose hands our boat will journey to is a great and exciting mystery, but with GPS technology, we can track its path. Closer to home, students will experience sailing in Long Island Sound firsthand aboard SoundWaters, an 80 foot schooner, and will learn about this local marine habitat. This experience transcends subject area boundaries. Students learn about life science, earth science, physics, oceanography, geography, meteorology, civics, writing, and technology, all with the hope of fostering an international connection across the Atlantic Ocean!
