JP Carroll Roofing Grant: Shake, Rattle, and Roll

  • School Year: 2025-2026
  • Applicants: Bethany Carbone, Elizabeth Grieco, Jackie Makarewicz
  • School: Smith
  • Subjects: Science, Social Studies, Technology

Fourth-grade students at Smith STEM Elementary School are shaking up science by learning about plate tectonics, natural disasters, and engineering through a hands-on, NGSS-aligned unit. As part of their study, students complete a "Most Dangerous Place in the World" bracket and design earthquake-resistant towers. To enhance this experience, students will use a Tremor Table- a tool that simulates real seismic activity so students can test their structures in action. The Tremor Table will also be used with second graders to demonstrate how earthquakes and other fast changes affect landforms. This engaging, cross-grade resource brings Earth science to life while building problem-solving and teamwork skills. With this addition, students will not only understand how the Earth moves-they'll experience it.
