This grant will serve as a pilot program within an alternative high school setting. The goal of the grant is to foster self-confidence, increase motivation, and to engage students in service learning experiences. The STARS Pilot Program will target 45 Conard High School students identified as at-risk who struggle with academics and behavior due to family and personal circumstances. The STARS Pilot grant will allow students to participate in a Fall Leadership Conference focusing on leadership and teamwork. The second component is Connecticut Legislative Day when participating students from West Hartford and other school districts will go to the State Capital to meet with state legislators about how alternative education within the public high schools has been a positive influence in their lives. The third part of this grant is the STARS Events Conference during which the students will participate either individually or as part of a team in competitive events such as public speaking, career portfolio, community service project, and team audio or video production.
