  • School: Duffy
  • Subjects: Language Arts, Social Emotional Learning, Diversity/Equity

Book clubs can be an essential way to engage reluctant readers into becoming more active learners. In this grant, students in 4th grade at Duffy school will be offered a wide variety of diverse books. They will form book clubs that go beyond comprehension questions and into discussion with their peers about characters, ideas, circumstances. Along the way, students will learn how to engage in academic conversations with their peers and help build any missing or lacking skills caused by the pandemic interruption of their social skills. Books chosen are a wide variety of reading levels to enable all students to independently read and participate in the book clubs. Books also feature diverse characters to offer students a chance to see someone like themselves as the heroes or a chance to see someone who is different from them as the heroes. The books also offer an insight into many different cultures and backgrounds.
