This African Artist in Residence program is an enriching cultural experience that will immerse three classes of First Grade students at Bubgee Elementary School in many aspects of African culture during the 2018-2019 school year. Won-Ldy Paye is an award winning children's book author, performer and artist who captivates both young and old with his many talents. He will visit each classroom where students will learn about and participate in activities involving West African (Liberian) art, music and storytelling. This residency will support our school’s teaching of Social Studies and the English/Language Arts Common Core Standards as well as provide students with a diverse cultural experience. This experience with an African artist in residence will provide students with an opportunity to develop greater cultural awareness and an appreciation of other cultures. Students will also be able to explore and examine maps, give and follow cardinal directions, and chart a path from one location to another though work with the African continent map.
