Mr. and Mrs. Dupee Grant: "Becoming Bugbee"
- School Year: 2020-2021
- Applicants: Elizabeth Bianco, Lead Teacher
- School: Bugbee
- Subjects: Visual Arts, Other (Social and Emotional Learning / Cultural Competency / Diversity)
“Becoming Bugbee” is a project that seeks to engage the entire Bugbee student community in the process of artistic inquiry about their cultures and identities. Students will work with West Hartford resident John Walsh. Walsh is a professional artist whose work often focuses on graphic narratives that explore the intersection of racism, religious bigotry and immigration, among many other topics. Walsh’s “Becoming Boston” was a visual narrative of Boston’s immigrant community and the inspiration for this project. Students will explore their backgrounds and consider their family traditions; then they will create works of art that have a uniform format school-wide but a slightly differentiated outcome to meet all levels of our entire student population. A presentation of this work will exhibit the diverse identities of Bugbee students.
