Students with special needs in the STRIVE program in grades 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to learn basic life skills as they immerse themselves in hands-on activities of everything that goes into preparing a meal. From choosing recipes and identifying ingredients to shopping for food and preparing a meal, students will work together to plan and prepare a meal. They will also have a chance to share their own food traditions. The lessons will promote planning and organization, task initiation, attention and life skills. More important, the group activity will promote social interactions and communication, with an emphasis on cooperative learning. At the end of the year, students will select a local restaurant where they can all share a meal.
