Nolin Selby Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation Grant: Creating Apps for Devices & Designing an Interactive Pet

  • School Year: 2024-2025
  • Applicants: Dawn Anstett, Lead Applicant & Carey Poetzsch (King Philip)
  • School: Bristow Middle School
  • Subjects: Technology, STEAM

This grant aims to foster a deeper understanding of coding and artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating hands-on experiences with the micro:bit, a small yet powerful handheld device. Our program will introduce seventh-grade students from Bristow Middle School and King Philip Middle School to the fundamentals of coding through interactive, real-world applications. Using Code.org’s App Lab, students will learn to program the micro:bit, a pocket-sized computer with an LED display, buttons, sensors, and other features, making it an ideal tool to connect software and hardware learning. The project will engage students in creating their own interactive electronic pet. By guiding them through the design process, students will customize their projects, allowing for creative expression while learning the essential skills that drive today’s AI and coding technologies. This initiative will not only provide students with a hands-on understanding of how coding and AI are used to control physical devices but will also ensure they gain the skills to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world. Through this fun and educational experience, we aim to inspire the next generation of innovators.
