- Applicants: Adrianne Giammatteo , Lead Teacher Michelle Florence, Nora Brown
- School: Charter Oak

To align with the study of adaptations of living things and enhance the common core writing curriculum, third grade students at Charter Oak Elementary School will participate in a “Birds of Prey” demonstration presented by Wingmasters, a partnership dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of birds of prey. While addressing the central idea that living things go through a process of change in order to survive, the students will meet at least five live rehabilitated birds of prey and explore the concepts of animal and human communities sharing the planet, predation, endangered species and extinction. They will document their experience through note taking, word walls, photography and create informational and opinion writing samples; letters, multimedia presentations, posters and flyers, to encourage others to save these birds and their habitats. To extend this learning, the students will also create investigation posters constructing their own animal and documenting its habitat, needs, diet and the role humans play in its survival. All of this will be shared with the community during Charter Oaks Inquiry Gallery.
