Optometric Specialty Group Grant: Biotechnology and the Genome Generation
- School Year: 2019-2020
- Applicants: Benjamin Norland, Lead Teacher
- School: Hall High School
- Subjects: Science
Biotechnology and the Genome Generation is a shift in the biology curriculum to better address 21st century skills as well as prepare students for the modern medical world they will soon enter as adults. Genomic sequencing is getting cheaper and faster every year. Their personal genetic information will become a critical part of their own medical care and our students need to understand how that information is gathered and processed and the ethical issues that surround the private genetic testing industry and genetic testing in general. Students will explore the technical and ethical aspects of genomic science and its applications. The LONZA FlashGel System for gel electrophoresis allows students to visulize and compare DNA samples, make genetic comparasions and even genotype sampes. Furthermore, samples can be extraced from the gell for equcing and bioinformatic study later.
