One third of the preschool population in West Hartford comes from a home where English is not the primary language. The “Parent Storytellers Program” will give parents of these students the skills to support and develop their child's literacy and language at home in their native language through shared reading and storytelling. This will be achieved by providing hands-on training, ongoing modeling of learned strategies and the bilingual resources for parents to read to their children. Parents will receive training with district specialists in language and literacy strategies and will have the opportunity to read stories in their native language in their child's classroom on a monthly basis. This program will provide a bridge between the students' native language and English by sharing the same stories, vocabulary and concepts in both languages.
