One of the hardest things about teaching the Age of Exploration and colonial America to fifth grade students is the limited number of female figures in the time period. As a fifth grade girl, it's easy to believe that the world is dominated by men. As a means of counteracting this narrative, Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls 2 - a book of 100 biographies of women who changed the world - will be introduced to the students and used as a launching point for research and writing. For every Columbus and Franklin are many, many women from history that are too often forgotten and ignored. Books like these will help put an end to this misconception and bring women to the forefront of history for our students. By seeing that women have played an enormous role in the history of the world, students will recognize that the world is more diverse than they may have ever known.
