Rotary Club of West Hartford Grant: iPads to Support English Language Learners (ELLs) in the Classroom

  • School Year: 2025-2026
  • Applicants: Lauren Masella
  • School: Sedgwick Middle School
  • Subjects: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Diversity/Equity

This project at Sedgwick Middle School aims to provide iPads to support multilingual learners in accessing and engaging with curriculum across subjects. With features like instant translation, speech-to-text, and text recognition, iPads help students overcome language barriers in real time. In Math, they can translate complex word problems or guided notes, making the content more accessible and allowing them to productively struggle along with their classmates. In subjects like Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts, students can use the devices to contribute to discussions, express their ideas, and collaborate with peers more confidently. By supporting understanding through students' home languages, iPads promote equity, increase participation, and empower all learners to thrive academically.
