Children need to be exposed to literature in which they are able to see themselves and their experiences reflected on the page. They also need to be exposed to books that serve as windows in which to see others who are not like themselves. Providing Norfeldt Elementary School students with the mirrors and windows of diverse literature and learning from an author of color writing from a lens of diversity, will be the catalyst to encourage children to rewrite their own stories while learning to empathize with others who are different from themselves.
