This grant will fund 2 standing desks for the 4th grade at Wolcott Elementary School to enhance learning and result in more focused, attentive and energetic students. Studies have shown that by incorporating standing, walking, and activity into your normal day can increase attention span and engagement, while also providing benefits to a child’s physical fitness. To start, the desks will be rotated to provide an opportunity for all students to benefit from increased focus, and be more engaged in classroom learning. As the year progresses, those students who find the most success from the desk with have access to one as needed. Students with behavior problems, such as inattentiveness, will be closely observed and their progress will be tracked and monitored by the school psychologist and social worker. In addition to tracking behavioral and academic success, test scores in the mile run and Connecticut Physical Fitness Test will be analyzed to evaluate the success of the desks.
