The Pauluk Family Grant: Silkworms and Their Importance to Ancient China

  • School Year: 2015-2016
  • Applicants: Susan Winslow, Lead Teacher
  • School: Bristow Middle School
  • Subjects: Social Studies

Seventh graders at Bristow Middle School will study the history of silk and its importance in ancient China. They will then each be responsible for taking home and caring for a silkworm. The students will be able to observe the silkworm spin its cocoon of silk. The students will be able to boil the cocoon as the ancient Chinese did to unravel the silk, or let the silk moth emerge from the cocoon. This hands-on experience will give the students an understanding of the life-cycle of the silkworm, as well as its significance in the history of China.
