Tobacco Free-The Mad Science Way to Be
- School Year: 2014-2015
- Applicants: Alison Lessard, Lead Teacher Mike Flaherty
- School: King Philip Middle School
- Subjects: Physical Health Education
Mad Science, a traveling educational science troupe, will provide the entire King Philip Middle School sixth grade, approximately 300 students, with an educational and entertaining stage show performance highlighting the health risks of tobacco use and second hand smoke. The stage show entitled, “Be Tobacco Free,” will complement the 6th grade health curriculum, as well as serve as a culminating activity for the school-wide recognition of National Red Ribbon Week (a week long drug and tobacco prevention campaign). A trained Mad Scientist will provide students with the opportunity to learn about the toxins in tobacco products; pump up a healthy lung and compare it to a diseased, cancerous lung; as well as observe the oxygen absorbing capabilities of both. These stunning demonstrations will reveal the science behind tobacco use.
