Okey Ndibe is a West Hartford resident and author of acclaimed short stories, novels, a memoir, essays, and political commentary in various respected online and print publications. He will use his life experience to bring the far-reaching economic, cultural, and political impacts of British colonization in Nigeria to life for various social studies classes. During his talk, he will delve into different topics, including growing up in Nigeria towards the end of British colonization, his family’s refugee experience during the Nigerian Civil War, his experience as an American immigrant, and his journey to becoming a successful author and political commentator. Professor Ndibe will also spend two sessions teaching ELA students about his narrative writing process. He will design a lesson to help facilitate students’ ability to add an authentic voice and tone to their narrative writing. During the subsequent workshop, Professor Ndibe will model how to give effective feedback, and students will practice these skills with their peers.
