Webersen Family Grant: Social Justice Theatre: #WhileBlack

• School Year: 2020-2021
• Applicants: Hunter Parker, Lead Teacher
• School: Hall High School
• Subjects:

This grant provides 11th and 12th grade students in Hall’s Specialized Performance Study acting class the opportunity to collaborate with a group of acting students in urban Norfolk, VA to create a performance and dialogue around social justice, race, and community. Students will work directly with a professional director, playwright, and their teachers to explore these important topics together. The project will culminate in a virtual production of an original play titled #WhileBlack, followed by a talkback discussion. The play explores ideas of urban gentrification and gives students an opportunity to discuss current events and react to the current social climate with peers from another part of the country and in a different demographic. The experience will allow students and community members to experience the power of theatre for social change. Click here to view the play and talkback session.
