Woods Family Grant: Read Around the World
- School Year: 2017-2018
- Applicants: Karen Gravel, Lead Teacher Helena Mansfield
- School: Braeburn
- Subjects: Language Arts
This grant will provide funding to create a library of multicultural children’s literature that celebrates the diverse population at Braeburn Elementary School. Picture books will be purchased in languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Russian, Finnish, Vietnamese and Mandarin. Family members who speak these native languages will be invited to read to the students and share something from their personal culture. Book jackets of these multicultural titles will be created by the students and displayed in the school hallways to generate interest in these new resources. In addition, each week a new book and language will be introduced to the students during morning announcements and a photo of the book will be displayed on the TV monitor in the main hallway. This library will increase family involvement in the school experience, enhance a sense of self worth in students and achieve educational equity by having the opportunity to teach from a multicultural perspective.
